Three Ways Small Businesses Can Win The Online Retail Game This Holiday Season

Posted by equilease_admin on November 27, 2017

Three ways small businesses can win the online retail game this holiday season

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … for retail. The two-month span of November and December can make or break business performance for major brands and retailers, so they need to leverage every sales avenue possible to reach consumers whenever, wherever they are ready to spend.

Online channels are now table stakes for retailers during the holidays. Case in point: A recent survey by Leger, commissioned by eBay Canada, reveals that the majority of Canadians (54 percent) plan to shop online for some or all of their holiday items this season. Further, two-thirds of Canadians believe that shopping online helps them avoid the holiday grind, and saves them time, stress and money.

But the online holiday game isn’t just for the big players – Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) can also capitalize on this retail trend. In fact, with easy-to-use and cost-effective e-commerce platforms available, SMBs have unprecedented opportunities to reach holiday shoppers – they just need to play the game a little differently. Here are three ways retail SMBs can maximize their online holiday game to make this season their best one yet: Read Mo‪re...

Export Tips From Some of Canada’s Fastest-Growing Companies

Export tips from some of Canada’s fastest-growing companies

Many Canadian companies never sell a thing outside their own borders. Exporting presents challenges, but those who’ve done it say it’s worth it.

If there’s one criticism about Canadian businesses that crops up time and again, it’s that they aren’t eager enough to pursue opportunities in foreign markets. As a Senate report noted in 2015, “An aversion to risk may…prevent Canadian businesses, particularly SMEs, from pursuing international trade opportunities.” Of course, risk aversion isn’t the whole story. The same report from the Senate standing committee also observed that other factors seem to deter Canadian companies from being more export-oriented. Whether it’s language barriers, a lack of information on specific opportunities abroad or uncertainty about details on tariffs, there are a wide variety of reasons many Canadian businesses remain too close to home. Ontario Cuts Small Business Taxes to Ease Transition to Higher Minimum Wage

Ontario cuts small business taxes to ease transition to higher minimum wage

The corporate tax rate for small businesses will fall from 4.5 percent to 3.5 percent effective Jan. 1, 2018

With an eye to next spring’s election, Ontario’s Liberal government will slash small business taxes as part of $500 million in new investments aimed at easing the transition to the province’s increasing minimum wage.

Finance Minister Charles Sousa unveiled the government plan in the province’s fall economic statement Tuesday afternoon. The corporate tax rate for small businesses will fall from 4.5 percent to 3.5 percent effective Jan. 1, 2018, the same day the province will increase its minimum wage from $11.60 to $14.

Critics of the government’s sweeping labour reform package introduced in May have called for the tax offsets for months to allow businesses to absorb the cost. The government plan will eventually see minimum wage jump to $15 an hour by Jan. 1, 2019. Read Mo‪re...

Boston Pizza’s Jim Treliving: The Seven Keys to Franchise Success

Boston Pizza’s Jim Treliving: the seven keys to franchise success

As chairman and owner of Canadian restaurant chain Boston Pizza International, Jim Treliving, a venture capitalist and a regular on CBC’s Dragons’ Den 12 years running, knows what makes a franchise successful. That’s not only because of what he’s done right over five decades, but also what he’s done wrong – and lived to tell about.

Treliving first walked into the original Boston Pizza restaurant in Edmonton as an RCMP constable in 1966. He franchised his first restaurant in 1968; today, the chain boasts almost 400 outlets in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Appearing in Vancouver on Oct. 17 at a TD-sponsored event, he spoke to an audience of small business owners on strategies to improve the likelihood of success for franchisees. Here are his keys to franchise success Read Mo‪re...

Watch for These Changes to HR Laws Relating to Contract Employees

Posted by equilease_admin on September 13, 2017

Watch for these changes to HR laws relating to contract employees

In Ontario, employers may now be subject to serious penalties for misclassifying an employee.

If your organization currently utilizes the services of contract employees, proposed employment law changes introduced recently by the Ontario government should give you cause for concern.

That’s because Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals have substantially upped the ante when it comes to protecting Ontario workers at a time when precarious and part-time employment opportunities become more abundant and traditional full-time positions — with competitive salaries and benefits — become increasingly scarce. At least some of these proposed changes are justifiable, but their quick implementation is all but guaranteed to create challenges for employers, ranging from multinationals to SMBs, operating in the province.

The government released a set of proposed labour and employment law changes set to come into effect over the next two years. When passed, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017, will be the most sweeping package of amendments to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act and Labour Relations Act in at least a generation. Read Mo‪re...

Social Media Sites Take On Kijiji, Craigslist As Second-Hand Sales Soar

Social Media Selling Varagesale

Facebook's Marketplace and startups like VarageSale are the latest to muscle in on a growing community of consumers.

Kijiji and Craigslist disrupted print classifieds and moved much of them online. Now social media selling is disrupting Kijiji and Craigslist, according to Janet Bannister, who is in a position to know — she founded Kijiji in Canada and is now a member of the board of directors at VarageSale.

“It creates what feels like a friendlier and more social place to buy and sell,” said Bannister. Second-hand sellers are using social media platforms like Instagram, posting items for sale using hashtags, like #Torontobuyandsell or #buyandsell, or #buyandsellkicks and the newly launched #FacebookMarketplace. Read Mo‪re...

How To Write Off Business Travel and Not Trigger Red Flags at Canada Revenue Agency

How to write off business travel and not trigger red flags at Canada Revenue Agency

In his 23 years as an accountant, Frank Jasek has been asked by clients "more than once" whether they can write off gambling expenses in Las Vegas (no, even if they are with a client). And ditto for escort services, even though they're legal in the state of Nevada.

Business travel is one expense category that attracts a second look from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), mainly because there's potential for personal benefit, says Jasek, a partner with tax and accounting firm Prapavessis Jasek in Toronto. As a result, he says, in recent years, the CRA has homed in closer on those writing off business travel expenses.

Red flags for the tax man. The CRA uses sophisticated algorithms to suss out expenses that seem out of whack. “It’s all about percentages,” says Jasek. “When we look at clients’ expense reports, if we see more than 10 per cent allocated to travel, we ask about it. That’s a lot.” Read Mo‪re...

Former Toronto Maple Leafs Captain Wendel Clark on Leading Under Pressure

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Wendel Clark on leading under pressure

“It’s all about carrying yourself with confidence. On the ice, if you dictate the play, you skate away from the scrum when you want to. You call the shots.”

You joined the NHL as a hot prospect—the No. 1 pick in the 1985 entry draft. Was that a lot of pressure out of the gate?

There was general pressure, yes, but I think players put more pressure on themselves than what comes from the outside. When you’re a rookie at 18, there’s so much excitement that it outweighs some of the pressure.

Have you developed any tricks to keep stress in check over the years?

I think the most important thing is recognizing what you can control and what you can’t. On the ice, you can compete and work as hard as you can. Off the ice, you can control how well you get along with your teammates and the atmosphere in the dressing room. But you can’t really control something like the media, so why worry about it? Throw your energy at the things you can control. Read Mo‪re...

This is Exactly How Many American Jobs Depend on Canada–U.S. Trade

how many American jobs depend on Canada–U.S. trade

The rising protectionist mood in the U.S. is making Canadian exporters nervous, but there are millions of Americans whose jobs depend on cross-border trade too

With U.S. president Donald Trump vowing to pursue border taxes, renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement and implement policies that put “American workers and businesses first,” Canada has reason to be concerned.

The federal government is well aware of the economic risks. Cabinet members are currently huddled in Calgary for a two-day retreat, where the focus is reportedly on preparing for a Trump presidency. In conversations with their American counterparts so far, federal government officials have emphasized the importance of Canada to the United States economy and reiterated the two countries enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship. Stephen Schwarzman, the CEO of Blackstone Group and head of Trump’s strategic and policy forum, echoed those points today. “Trade between the US and Canada is very much in balance and is a model for the way trade relations should be,” Schwarzman told reporters. “So I think Canada is very well positioned in discussions with the United States.” Read Mo‪re...
